Caroline Thomas Howland

On Lying Awake at Newport, Rhode Island, One Summer Night

(To be sung with guitar or banjo).

Trees with the murmuring leaves,

Stirred by the summer breeze,

Born of the far off seas,

Oh, give me slumber.

Stars of the quiet night,

With all your silvery light,

Watch until morning bright |

And give me slumber.

Earth, on whose tender breast .

I lay me down to rest,

O! send me what is best

Now, dreamless slumber.

God of the earth and sky,

In whose deep love I lie,

Guard me when night is nigh

And give me slumber.
